Q.28. What did God promise in the covenant of life?
A. To reward Adam with life if he obeyed God perfectly. (Gal 3:12)

But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.”

Galatians 3:12 ESV

This question is important because it tells us whether God gave only a simple law to Adam, or God made a covenant with him. The covenant has a condition (obedience), a penalty for disobedience (death), and a promise of reward (life). As with the previous questions, the covenant was given for the betterment and advancement of Adam’s state and all humanity in him.

The reward for his perfect obedience to God is life symbolized by the Tree of Life (3:22). It is not a life like his condition when the law was given because if so, he could still sin. Many disagree with this, yet it is clear in the Scripture (Rev 2: 7), the parallelism between Adam and Jesus, and the glory that is to come.

Although there is a reward, it is from the free grace of God alone. That is, Adam did not deserve to be rewarded by God. We can tell the children that their obedience to their parents does not always have an equal reward. They do this because it is God’s command and they love their parents.

Note: This question is #26 in the Children’s Catechism
