Arrogant. Hyper-intellectuals. Combative. In the world of social media, Calvinism is almost always equated with these derogatory descriptions. But it should not be the case, in fact, true Calvinist should not be. A proud and arrogant heart cannot co-exist with a Calvinist humbled by God’s transforming grace in Christ.
This book, like Al Martin’s Practical Implication of Calvinism, is a solemn reminder to those who hold the glorious doctrines of grace. Ryken spells out how the doctrines of grace promote and fuel a holy life. A true Calvinist has a God-centered mind, penitent spirit, grateful heart, submissive will, holy life, and glorious purpose.
Here are some quotes.
“The doctrines of grace help to preserve all that is right a good in the Christian life: humility, holiness, and thankfulness, with a passion for prayer and evangelism.” (6)
“…although people who identify themselves as Calvinists are usually strong-minded, they are not always large-hearted… Calvinism is not a set of doctrines but a whole way of life. God has revealed the doctrines of grace not simply for the instruction of our minds but ultimately for the transformation of our lives.” (11)
“A graceless Calvinism is thoroughly repugnant to the gospel, for unless the pursuit of holiness is motivated by an ever-deepening love for God and his grace, it quickly becomes joyless and fruitless.” (22)
“…every affliction is an opportunity for submission to God’s good and perfect will.” (28)
“…true Calvinist has a mind that is centered on God’s majesty, a spirit that is sorry for sin, a heart that is full of gratitude for God’s grace, and a will that submits to his holy purpose… whose whole person and entire life are dedicated to the glory of God.” (29)
“It is impossible to be jealous for God’s glory without having an equal passion for correct doctrine, because correct doctrine is what preserves the graciousness of the gospel.” (29)
To God be the glory!
